Farewell for Flute Solo Chih-Chen Wei
Farewell is a poem by Poet Wei Wang (701-761), whose works represent “poems on paintings, and paintings on poems.”
A creative work is derived from the mind. The destination of composition is not the journey to the end, but to treasure each moment of the creative journey. This flute solo shows the composer’s doubts and answers towards life. It is beyond a normal “farewell.” It means the hope of a reunion after a goodbye. In this situation, there is no true farewell. Instead, it is a farewell to the attachment and limit of oneself; farewell to the worries and vexations; and farewell to the conflict and insecurity towards one’s outer environment and inner self. Finally, when one reveals their true self, one can let go of all the meaninglessness – receiving compassion and wisdom in return. At last, one can gain eternal peacefulness and blessing.

取自王維同名詩作 “告別”
山中相送罷，日暮掩柴扉。
春草年年綠，王孫歸不歸。
創作的源頭來自於生活的感受，自然也與詩人和作曲者的心境相吻合。這首送別詩，不寫离亭餞別的依依不舍，卻更進一層寫冀望別后重聚。這是超出一般送別詩的所在。《告別》這首為長笛而寫的作品，呈現了作曲者在面對中年的疑惑與對生命的懷疑及感悟。期望告別了青春年少的執著與設限，期望告別了種種身心的煩惱與苦悶，期望告別了外在環境與內在自我的衝突與不安全感。作曲的目的不在於終點而在於每個創作的過程，在經歷了種種的年少的情緒與心態後，期望能夠進入自我生命的別后重聚，意即，回到人之初的原始與純真，進而懂得放下與捨得，懂得慈悲與智慧，最終能獲得平安與喜樂。
